Age: 25
How long have you been mixing? Since Jan 05
First party you went to? Pump @ The Apia Club 1995
How did you get into oldskwl and what does it mean to you? Well... one day in 1993 (when I was in yr7) my sister brought home a mix tape called “Paul Holden – Wicked”. We listened to it in the car on a family holiday, and this was my first experience of “techno”. Being a Metallica fan at the time, it was an easy progression to techno - I loved anything that could evoke an emotion in me. Speed Racer was a favourite on this tape, along with Arriba Arriba and Confusion (could never work out if they were saying “I feel the future or confusion deep inside of me” lol). Favourite part on that tape has got to be when Drop – Make It Together smoothly glides in right after Energy 52 – Café Del Mar! I have played that part repeatedly since high school and it’s never lost its magic.
Oldskool reminds me of the ‘good old days’ - playing soccer, fun at school and Pump @ The Apia Club! If I had to pin point what has kept me faithful to the oldskool sound for so many years, I’d have to put it down to the piano that bursts through like a bright light every now and then for that solo heaven, and then having a nice big drum beat welcome you back to start your heart beating again. A definition of oldskool perhaps:
“when goodness comes for free, when no strings are attached, when friends are true, when purity is in its most original form - that’s oldskool”
Name the most recent additions to your record box?
1. Midas – Groove Control 2. Ironya – Stay With Me 3. DyeWitness – 7 Days/Only If I Had One More/Brrr 4. Rexanthony – Boxing Columbia 5. Dj Thoka – You Make Me Feel (remix) 6. Neurotek – 168 EP 7. Hard Concert – Break It Up (central station) 8. Ultimate Buzz – Check Da Bass 9. General Base – First Album
What are your 3 favourite record labels?
In no particular order…
1. Impact or Hectic (because of that fucking great breakbeat) 2. Extreme (because of Ironya – Stay With Me or Advisory - Everynight) 3. Union (because of Romeo Blue – That Music)
Describe your style and what can we expect to hear from you at Back to Unity. Well I try to find those long mixes that “just work” and fade or transition from one track to another, but that doesn’t work all the time, so every now and then I still love to cut to another track for a next track preview. I love finding “new mixes” where 2 tracks played together gives you a whole new sound and feeling, and you experience that splash of euphoria all over again.
