Age: 28
How long have you been mixing? I’ve been mixing on and off since 1995 – also in that time I collected a bunch of synths that I messed around with. Purely bedroom based, the only lasting recording I have is a 90min cassette that I recorded one messy Sunday. After a crate of my records were pinched from a party and having to sell a bunch of my synths over time, I relegated what was left to collect dust in the attic. I sold my trusty Juno106 and TR606 to a friend of mine enabling me to scrape together the funds & purchase decks again about 2 years ago.
First party you went to? Stun@Neo Pharoahs
How did you get into oldskwl and what does it mean to you? I was force-fed early hardcore & house cassettes from a long time family friend (Bkatz) in a time when I was solidly into Dub reggae and Punk.
It took a while to catch on with me, but slowly the electronic sound took hold. I was listening to community radio a lot at that stage, following the rare Dub grooves – more and more I would hear techno music on the radio stations I frequented. I was listening (and recording) the techno shows as much as I was the Dub shows. These were the days of walkmans & rechargeable battery’s! I guess for me when Itchee & Scratchee’s “Sweetness & Light” broke through as a number one on the Aria’s it became apparent that this “repetitive bassy noise” was certainly the way of the future.
I was taken to Neo’s by an older friend and the rest is history (or addiction… I’m not sure which!)
Name the most recent additions to your record box? Maxx - No More (remix), Blasfemia - Morning Time, Technotronic - Move it to the Rhythm
What are your 3 favourite record labels? FARM(DDM), DIG IT, ITALIAN STYLE
Describe your style and what we can expect to hear from you at Back to Unity. Loads of screaming fem vocals, chunky nrg trance basslines, 4-to-the-floor kick drums and pushing synths – a journey of obscurities and a few classics to stop your heart and take you back to the smoky haze of big warehouse sheds, the familiar murmur of generators out the back and the pounding of a chunky system!
